Bank holidays are great, and are eagerly anticipated by most of us. Whether it's a family day out in the North while the kids are off school, or a weekend getaway with your loved one, enjoy the extra time off!

Train travel during bank holidays

Train services still run over bank holidays, although there could be disruptions with some routes having a reduced timetable, and a few closed completely. This is due to ongoing essential engineering work being carried out. Wherever possible, though, alternative transport is provided.

You'll find up-to-date information on our Engineering and Disruptions page.

During bank holidays engineers are often scheduled to carry out essential work on the railways. As a result, services can face disruptions, or even cancellations, some of which only become apparent at short notice as the engineers are in the process of working. This is why our free downloadable app is so useful and can alert you to any issues with the route you plan to take.

FAQs

Bank holidays are when most scheduled engineering works are carried out. Unfortunately, this can lead to delays, and in some cases, cancellations.

Northern work hard to ensure that as many trains as possible run on time over bank holiday weekends. However, disruptions do occur as scheduled works are carried out by our engineers. We always try to keep these to a minimum.
