Get some fresh air

Sheffield is one of the UK’s greenest cities, which means you’re never far from a great park, so, if you fancy a rail journey with your canine companion Sheffield is the pawfect destination. The hilly terrain means with a short walk you can soak in great views across the city. Sheaf Valley Park is a local favourite and being only a short walk from the train station, it couldn’t be easier to enjoy the skyline. This park is also a popular sunset viewing spot, the perfect way to end a day out!

To really stretch your legs, walk the The Five Weirs Canal Walk. This 7.5km route along the water can by walked or cycled starting from Lady's Bridge, in the Castlegate district of the city centre. This path takes you along the River Don, passing the five historic weirs from which it takes its name.

Explore an urban jungle

Located just a few minutes walk from the train station you’ll find the Sheffield Winter Garden, one of the largest temperate glasshouses in the UK. The Winter Garden is free to visit and offers visitors the chance to walk and sit amongst 2,500 plants from around the world, as well as being able to browse a few independent gift shops and cafes located in the gardens.

A taste of Sheffield’s art, craft and design scene

Connected to The Winter Garden is the Millennium Gallery, the perfect spot to spend some time admiring exhibitions which pay homage to Sheffield’s heritage in metalwork, as well as contemporary art exhibitions. Whilst the gallery is free to enter, they do ask visitors to consider making a donation, this is certainly worth it to see one of the finest metalwork collections in existence.

A short walk from here is also Site Gallery, a large scale gallery specialising in moving image, new media and performance. This free to enter gallery works to support the development of contemporary art by partnering with local, regional and international collaborators. While the café and a fantastic shop may not be free, they’re well worth a visit.

If you strike lucky with the weather, there’s no need to head indoors to see great art. Sheffield city centre is a fantastic place to see some street art by local artists like Phlegm, Kid Acne, Jo Peel and more.

Blooming lovely

Sheffield is a city in bloom with Pollen, a free inner-City Flower Market that brings vibrant greenery, live music, art and local produce to Castlegate, a 15-minute walk from the train station. The market takes place on the third Sunday of every month and celebrates the vibrancy of Sheffield and its people.

People watch at the Peace Gardens

Situated in front of Sheffield’s gothic town hall, the Peace Gardens provides an oasis right in the centre of the city. In the summer, it’s a popular spot to enjoy the sunshine and children are often seen running through the fountains. In winter, here you can meander around the Christmas markets, admiring the delicious treats and crafts Sheffield’s retailers can offer.
