Based in our Planning Office, apprentices play an important role in the teams who work behind the scenes. It’s all about making sure that all of our trains can run at the right times, be in the right places, and have the right people on board to keep customers moving.
What is required?
- Great problem-solving skills, and a logical approach
- Good numerical skills
- Ability to prioritise tasks
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
- An interest in trains and how the railway works
- Passing assessments in Maths, English, and ICT

What happens at the end?
At the end of the two-year scheme, qualified apprentices are invited to apply for permanent roles at Northern.

The Operations Apprenticeship, also known as a Business Administration scheme, includes training, developing knowledge, and completing assignments.

It also involves creating a detailed portfolio and group project, with the challenge of meeting all coursework deadlines while working in a role.
Training includes a range of tasks and challenges designed to qualify apprentices as Administrators with wide experience, gained from working closely with senior members of the team.

- The ability to work under pressure to deadlines

At the end of the 18-month scheme, qualified Operations Apprentices are invited to apply for permanent roles at Northern.

Based in either York or Manchester, apprentices experience a range of tasks as they build the skills to become competent in Control and making sure that our trains can run at the right times, be in the right places, and have the right people on board to keep Northern’s customers moving.
