Applying at Northern
Yes. You can apply for more than one role, but that we recommend you think carefully about which roles best suit your skills and experience before you apply.
If you are applying for a Driver or Conductor role, and we’re advertising multiple locations, please apply for the location closest to your home address. You will not be able to progress with multiple driver or conductor applications at different locations.
Unfortunately, we can’t accept applications after the closing date for any role. Roles are generally open for applications for 1-2 weeks before they close.
Yes. We only accept applications online via our online system. You can see all of our current roles here.
Yes – please complete the section asking for details of your referees. We promise we won't contact your referees during the initial recruitment process, but we will contact them if you are offered a role, and we will always check with you first before we do this.
Yes, if you already work for Northern, you should let your manager know that you are applying for a new role within the business.
If you’ve withdrawn an application in error or want to amend your application after you have submitted it, or even locked yourself out of the system, please click on the ‘Contact us – Technical query’ link on the bottom left of the online system. This will put you directly in touch with our technical team who’ll be able to help.
Please click on the ‘Forgotten your password’ link on the log in screen and you will be able to change your password.
No – these roles are safety critical, so you must live within a 45 minute peak time commute (without relying on public transport) at the time of your application. When we review applications, we’ll check your home postcode against the postcode of the depot you are applying for using Google Maps, so that we can identify your travelling time.
After You Apply
Many of our roles do attract a lot of interest, so sometimes it does take longer than we would hope to review all applications. Please bear with us while we review all applications - we promise we’ll get back to you ASAP to let you know whether you have made it to the next stage.
We usually send updates by email, so please check your email inbox regularly (and your junk folders just in case!). You can also log into our careers portal to check whether we’ve been in touch with you. We may also contact you by phone if there’s anything urgent or important that we need to tell you.
Unfortunately we are unable to offer feedback on applications at this stage due to the high volumes that we receive.
You’re more than welcome to apply again if you’re not successful, but we recommend that you wait at least 6 months before submitting another application.
No – we expect you to make your own way to the interview venue. Most of the time interviews are held at the location where jobs are based. If it can’t be held at the exact location it will be at a venue within a reasonable travelling distance.
We recommend that you dress smartly, and we ask that you don’t wear jeans, sportswear or trainers. It’s important that you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing – and don’t be afraid to show some of your personality in your outfit choice!
We’ll keep you updated throughout the application process, and we’ll tell you as soon as we decide whether you have reached the next stage or not. If you apply for a role that has a large number of applicants, it might us take a little longer to get back to you so please bear with us.

Data Protection Statement
The information that you provide on your form and that obtained from other relevant sources will be used to process your application for employment.
The personal information that you give us will also be used in a confidential manner to help us monitor our recruitment process.
We may disclose your information to carefully selected third parties who may process data on our behalf, such as our appointed agents and service providers for the purposes of psychometric testing, medical examinations and associated arrangements for other similar services which are necessary in the recruitment and selection process. They or we may contact you by telephone, email or mail in connection with your application.
If you succeed in your application and take up employment with us, the information will be used in the administration of your employment with us and to provide you with information about us or a third party via your payslip. We may also use the information if there is a complaint or legal challenge relevant to this recruitment process.
We may check the information collected, with third parties or with other information held by us. We may also use or pass to certain third parties information to prevent or detect crime, to protect public funds, or in any other way as permitted by law.
Everything Else
Sorry, we don’t offer any work placements at Northern right now. Please keep checking back as this can sometimes change.
You can only attempt your driver psychometric assessment twice. If you fail on your first attempt, you must wait a minimum of six months from the date you took your assessment before you re-take it. We do not automatically invite you back in to be re-assessed, so if you still want to be a Driver you’ll need to reapply for another role once this six month period has passed.
Anyone who applies for a role must complete our medical process before a final offer of employment can be made. There are different medical standards depending on what role you have applied for, but all medicals will include a drugs and alcohol screening.
