Support Services
To keep the trains running we have teams working behind the scenes in support roles, such as IT, finance, audit, legal, communications, service planning, people (HR) and many more all working together to make sure our people and our customers receive a great colleague and customer experience.
The recruitment process for our Support Services roles consists of an interview with Northern’s Management team. Candidates may be required to take some online assessments (depending on the role applied for), followed by a new-starter medical, which includes drugs and alcohol screening. If the role applied for is safety-critical, candidates with defective colour vision will not be able to progress.

Our Marketing Team manages the marketing activity centrally for the whole of the Northern network. This includes delivering various large-scale, integrated marketing campaigns throughout the year, taking ownership of all marketing channels and making sure they are fit for purpose, up to date, and support the team effectively, to meet all monthly targets.
Day to day, it’s also about making sure customer relationship management and insight remains an integral part of everything the team delivers. Then there’s the management of the Northern website and our online ticket sales. You might also get involved in digital marketing, including PPC, search, email marketing and social media, or your challenge might be delivering sales promotions, like our famous flash sales, or even creating and delivering promotional content to support campaigns.
Promoting train travel, generating revenue, and making sure our customers understand all the benefits of travelling with Northern is an immensely varied and satisfying marketing challenge.

People
Our People teams are at the heart of everything we do - and they exist to help everyone across the business to go do their thing.
Whether that’s making our vision and mission a reality or living and breathing our values and behaviours.
In fact, you’ll meet most of the team along the way, from the very start of your journey with Northern. That might include our People Shared Service Team, who’ll help you join the business, our Learning and Talent team who’ll support you as you grow and develop to be the best you can be, or our Employee Relations Team who help us to create our policies.
What’s more, you’ll also find local People teams made up of Business Partners and Advisors across the North. We’re all here to guide you through our business - and the way we do things - whenever you need it.
But that’s just the beginning
Being such a big business, the number of people-focused roles we have is incredibly diverse. In fact, we regularly look for Recruiters, Service Delivery Trainers (who are already qualified Drivers and Conductors), Engineer Trainers, People Administrators, Talent and Attraction Specialists, Employee Relations Professionals and many more to join us.
And we’re also committed to making sure everyone has access to the kind of training and development that helps us all do our thing brilliantly well, too.
So, we’re investing in the latest tech that can help improve our entire employee lifecycle and make working for a large business like Northern much easier. Plus, we’re putting brand new working practices, policies and initiatives in place to bring everyone up to date when it comes to things like agile working and the menopause.
We’re even growing our own in-house team of Apprentice Coaches who each work closely with our Training Academy team to make the Northern learning journey a great experience.
And you’ll also find Human Resources Business Partners and Advisors who support our people and our wider management teams to make sure Northern will always be a great place to work.
What’s more, we offer a range of apprenticeships and other flexible learning packages through our learning management systems and our fantastic management development programmes - we call it Management 101.
And finally, we’ve introduced a dedicated in-house, Health and Wellbeing Manager who make sure we have everything in place to help us look after our people - and their families.
Doing your thing has never been more rewarding.
