How to celebrate Earth Day
Every year on 22 April, millions of people across the globe come together to celebrate Earth Day – a day that’s all about protecting the planet we call home. But this isn’t just about turning off a light or recycling your coffee cup (though those help too). It’s about making changes – big or small – that leave the world a little better than we found it.
Here at Northern, we’re passionate about making a positive difference for the North – in all we do and for all we serve. That means looking after our environment, our communities and our future. And Earth Day is the perfect time to go that extra mile (by train, of course) to do just that.
To celebrate Earth Day, why not get out and explore all the North has to offer? From beautiful countryside walks to running routes and outdoor adventures, discover our pick of the perfect Earth Day activities below.
What is Earth Day?
First things first, what is Earth Day anyway? It all started in 1970, when 20 million people in the US took to the streets to protest environmental damage. Today, it’s a global movement involving over a billion people in more than 190 countries.
The message is simple: take care of the Earth, and it’ll take care of us.
It’s a day to reflect on the choices we make – how we travel, what we buy, what we throw away – and think about how we can do things differently. Not just for one day, but every day of the year.
Why Earth Day matters – and how Northern helps
The North is full of stunning places, from moorlands to woodlands, beaches to buzzing cities and charming villages. But all that beauty needs to be protected.
That’s where train travel comes in. Did you know travelling by train produces up to 70% fewer carbon emissions than going by car? Fewer cars mean cleaner air, less congestion and a better future for everyone. As a more sustainable way to travel from A to B, we're working hard to make door-to-door journeys as seamless as possible. We want rail to be a key part of integrated transport across the North, connecting to bus services and cycle routes for a greener future.
