Dog-friendly York

Duke of York pub - The Duke of York is a modern classic pub located just a stone’s throw away from the iconic York Shambles. Offering traditional charm on the interior and a locally-sourced menu of traditional favourites which change seasonally, this is the perfect place to escape for a bite to eat, a cup of tea or a pint with your four-legged friend in tow.

The Whippet Inn- If you’re in search of delightful dog-friendly dining in York, The Whippet Inn, located in the city walls, but just off the beaten track is a must-visit. Specialising in Yorkshire beef, this steak and ale house is flying the flag for northern produce across both its food and drinks menu. To complement its offering of the finest cuts of meat, the menu also includes locally caught fish, unique vegetarian dishes and seasonal specials. The Perky Peacock - This independent coffee shop, café and bar is located in one of York’s oldest buildings, aptly named Barker Tower which was constructed in the 14th Century. Soak up some of the city’s history in medieval surroundings with a stunning view over the River Ouse and treat yourself to coffee and a slice of homemade cake, a sandwich or one of The Perky Peacock’s daily specials.

Valhalla - If you’re looking to be transported back in time, pop into Valhalla, a bar/café which pays homage to York’s Viking heritage. This establishment serves ales and mead in its atmospheric interior, decked out with beamed ceilings, carved wood and rustic chandeliers. Settle in and enjoy the menu of sharable tapas dishes for a group or opt for a larger portion if you’ve worked up an appetite. Valhalla operates on a walk-in basis only, making it the perfect drop-in after a spontaneous day of pottering around and giving the dog a leg-stretch.

Spring Espresso - Spring Espresso offers artisan coffee from award-winning baristas, as well as a range of Chinese tea and homemade cakes, out of two branches in York centre. Both its Fossgate and Lendal branches offer a relaxing and cosy haven in the thick of it. Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat from its Instagram-worthy all-day menu, or a dose of caffeine from their much-praised baristas, you and your dog are sure to enjoy a well-earned break at Spring Espresso.
