Harrogate is located perfectly between the Yorkshire Dales and the Vale of York resulting in gently rolling hills and open spaces to enjoy and just a short journey for the potential of much more. Possibly the most famous outdoor space in Harrogate itself is the Stray; 200 acres of open land that wraps around Harrogate town centre – meaning you are never more than five minutes away from green open spaces.
You can explore the Yorkshire outdoors straight from Harrogate town centre with a walk through the Valley Gardens and out of the town through the picturesque pine woods or along the Nidderdale Greenway which links the town centre to Knaresborough or the nearby village of Ripley with its impressive 14th century castle and popular ice cream.
Beyond Ripley is Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a goldmine for walking, fell running, mountain biking and road cycling. Nidderdale has a mixture of heather moorland, steep fells and ancient woodland that are home to many of our favourite wildlife species and crisscrossed with footpaths and bridleways waiting to be explored. Whether you are looking for a gentle riverside stroll or you relish looking down on a spectacular view having just conquered a steep and gruelling climb, Nidderdale will have something for you.
To get even more hands on with the landscape you can find outdoor pursuits and adventure activities such as abseiling, via ferrata and gorge scrambling for a memorable day out in the great Yorkshire Outdoors. What better way to build an appetite deserving of delicious Yorkshire produce available across the Harrogate district.
