Artwork created by students unveiled at Northern station in West Yorkshire

Five GCSE art students from Oastlers School in Bradford were tasked with creating the work - that features scenery from across the North of England - for Steeton and Silsden station.

The project, which was funded by Northern, was delivered in partnership with Community Rail Lancashire who organised their travel around the region in search of inspiration.

For some of the children it was their first time using the railway and they were taught how to travel safely by train.

They decided to produce a painting which depicts the rail line running from coast to coast, with images of Skipton, the Lake District, Ribblehead Viaduct, Bradford and Morecambe.

Their piece was unveiled during a ceremony in June at Steeton and Silsden station, which is operated by Northern and used by more than 756,000 customers a year.

Kerry Peters, regional director for Northern, said: “This impressive artwork is an excellent addition to the station and customers will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

“We work closely with schools, community groups and station adoption groups to ensure stations across our network are pleasant and welcoming places to visit.

“It’s fantastic to see that people of all ages are committed to improving their local stations and they take real pride in their communities.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
