Group’s artwork transforms two of Northern’s Cumbrian stations

A station adoption group has transformed two Cumbrian stations with handmade wooden artwork and planters – including a model train.

Skills 4 You is a group of station adopters based in Cleator Moor in Cumbria. They support individuals returning to work and those that are taking their first steps towards employment by offering advice and workshops to gain practical skills.

The group adopted Braystones and Nethertown stations in 2019 and is currently working to transform them into more vibrant and welcoming spaces.

Staff and learners from Skills 4 You recently worked on a beautiful wooden train set, which now stands at Braystones station.

Hand-painted wooden flowers and new planters have also been installed at Nethertown station.

The work was funded by Northern’s Station Adoption Fund.

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern said: “I’d like to thank everyone who created this colourful artwork at our stations.

“Our community partners are the heartbeat of the railway and we’re extremely proud to work closely with them to deliver such a wide-ranging positive impact for the north of England.”

“Our work within the community is part of our wider programme of improvements at many of our stations – including improved accessibility, car park refurbishments and improved CCTV – to encourage all our customers to ‘go do their thing’ and explore the north.

Warren Birch, community rail officer, said: “It's wonderful to see that the individuals from Skills 4 You are using these opportunities to further develop both themselves and these unique stations.”
