Lightning strike causes delays and cancellations in York

Due to lightning striking and damaging signalling equipment in York this morning, rail services across much of Yorkshire have been severely disrupted.

A spokesman for Northern said: “Northern customers are advised not to travel before 2pm across Yorkshire whilst the rail industry works to resolve the issues caused by the lightning.

“Customers are also asked to check carefully before travelling later in the afternoon as services are likely to be subject to further delays and cancellations – particularly as further storms are forecast into the evening.

“Northern customers can use their tickets on Arriva buses across Yorkshire for the rest of the day as an alternative to rail travel.”

The spokesman added: “Anyone whose journey today has been delayed by 30 minutes or more can claim compensation via the Delay Repay scheme – details can be found on our website.”
