Memorial garden in full bloom at Barrow station

A team of Northern traincrew based in Barrow have turned disused land into a memorial garden to remember three of their colleagues.

A dedicated team led by instructor driver Paul Thompson cleared weeds and eight-foot brambles from the site, transforming the space into somewhere they can remember their friends and sit in peace.

The garden honours three members of staff who sadly passed away over the last two years.

Northern donated a seat and stone slabs while ISS, a contractor for the train operator, helped to source materials.

Funds also came from Barrow and Workington's welfare, local builders' merchants Jewson, Travis Perkins and JT Atkinson as well as a Just Giving page.

Officially opened in mid-September, the garden has now bloomed. Flowers adorn the area and fruit and vegetables are grown in raised beds by volunteers, creating a place of calm and wellbeing.

Paul said: “I’m proud to show everyone what we have achieved at Barrow with a dedicated traincrew, we have made a great area to sit and relax. Any railway employee past or present can visit to sit and chill there.”

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern said: “I’m so proud of everyone who came together to create this wonderful space – it's a beautiful tribute.

“It will provide moments of tranquility and support the health and wellbeing of all our colleagues.”
