Northern books Cumbrian school children onto library service

Northern is helping a Cumbrian school encourage its pupils to read by ‘booking’ them onto their services for free to visit their local library.

The project is being run by Community Rail Cumbria with support from Northern.

During October and November, the train operator will transport dozens of children from Flimby Primary School to Maryport Library where they will sign up for membership and have some time to read together.

Craig Harrop, regional director at Northern said: “Northern is pleased to be supporting this scheme to get more students to their local library and get them interested in reading.

“I also hope that this will also show these young people how easy is to access the rail network ad build their confidence in travelling by train.”

Flimby Primary School has also adopted Flimby station, and the children have created several artworks adorning the platforms.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
