Northern confirms special rail service to Whitby on New Year’s Day

Northern has confirmed it will operate a special service on the Esk Valley Line for people looking to visit Whitby on New Year’s Day.

The service, from Darlington, will call at Thornaby, Middlesbrough, Nunthorpe, Battersby, Danby, Glaisdale and Grosmont.

Services will depart Darlington at 9.24am and 2.20pm, arriving into Whitby at 11.14am and 4.06pm. Return services will depart Whitby at 11.25am and 4.25pm, arriving into Darlington at 1.18pm and 6.15pm.

Jason Wade, regional director for Northern in the North East, said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer this dedicated service to ensure people can visit Whitby on New Year’s Day.

“Our full timetable resumes on Thursday 2 January and we look forward to helping our customers across the region get where they want to be.”

Earlier this month, Northern issued an appeal for customers to treat their staff with respect as part of a new campaign against anti-social behaviour.

It comes as the train operator revealed there have been 182 public order offences committed against its staff during 2024.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
