Northern offers free travel for armed forces on Remembrance Sunday as it prepares to pay tribute to the fallen
Those wearing an armed forces uniform and carrying a military ID card, as well as cadets in uniform and veterans who display valid identification (such as the Ministry of Defence issued Veteran's Badge) will be entitled to free travel on all Northern services on Sunday 12 November.
The hundreds of licensed poppy sellers, who have been volunteering in the lead up to this weekend, will also be able to take advantage of the offer.
Northern staff and communities are due to take part in remembrance events across network this week – with customers and colleagues from the rail industry joining Northern staff in paying tribute to those who have given their lives.
Northern staff and community groups will pay their own tributes to the armed forces with the following events:
- Wreaths will be laid at Sowerby Bridge, Mexborough and Batley station.
- Community groups have been busy decorating stations, including Westhoughton, Hindley and Leyland.
- At Ansdell & Fairhaven station in Lancashire, a display of poppies now adorns the platforms, created by local volunteers.
- Representatives from Northern will attend the Remembrance Service at the Railway Memorial, Station Rise in York to lay a wreath on Friday 10 November.
- At Manchester Victoria, a memorial service will be held at the station at Soldier’s Gate on Sunday 12 November with railway Chaplin Mike Roberts. A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am.
