Northern’s Alfie Lamb named ‘Rising Star of the Year’ at finance industry awards

One of Northern’s finance business partners has been named ‘Rising Star of the Year’ at The Finance Awards North West.

Alfie Lamb, who joined the train operator’s finance division in 2018, picked up the award at a ceremony in Manchester on Thursday (8 June).

The organiser of the awards said the rising star award is presented to the most passionate, driven and delivery focused part-qualified finance professional in the market, someone who is high achieving and outperforming their peer group.

In his category, for part-qualified professionals, Lamb was nominated alongside people from CableWorld Ltd, Stobart, J Murphy & Sons, THG Ltd, Manchester Airports Group and Light & Wonder.

Commenting on his success, Lamb said: “I’m really proud to have been named a ‘rising star’ of the industry I love.

“Northern is a great place to work and I’m very fortunate to have so many inspiring colleagues from across the business that are the top of their game that I can learn from.”

Lamb, who studied accounting and finance at Liverpool John Moores University, previously worked for Northern as an IT Field Engineer in 2017.

He became financial planning assistant in 2018 before working as assistant financial accountant for two and a half years from 2019 to 2021. Between 2021 and 2023 he was financial controls and management information accountant until his appointment as a finance business partner earlier this year.

The Finance Awards North West are organised by the recruitment agency Robert Walters in partnership with audit consultants RSM, banking giant HSBC and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

They seek to promote and celebrate the outstanding achievements of businesses and individuals within the North West's finance community that contribute to the economy and employment in the region.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
