Cycling
Here at Northern we are passionate and committed to promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport that complements our train service. Our vision is to 'connect people to opportunities by the most sustainable means' and cycling has an important role to play.
Many cycle-rail-cycle journeys provide the fastest overall way to travel door-to-door. You gain reliable journeys, without the need to search for a parking space, wait for a bus or a taxi and get some exercise that can make you feel good. With local and national agencies we can bring more homes and destinations within 10 to 20 minutes easy riding from a train service, via cycle routes and regular roads.

The combination of cycle and rail journeys offers a reliable, low cost, time and space efficient way to travel in a way which is environmentally friendly, healthy and enjoyable.
Bikes are carried free of charge at any time and you don't need to make reservations. The cycle space on trains is clearly marked, both internally and externally. Space is allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Currently we can only carry a maximum of two bikes per train and this is being reviewed to explore how we can increase our bicycle storage capacity.
Tandems, tricyles and trailers cannot currently be carried on board our trains, due to be space constraints.
We are committed to increasing the number of cycle-rail users, and our Cycling Promise details how we plan to achieve this.

We're upgrading our cycle storage at some stations, introducing new covered hubs with bike maintenance facilities where possible.
