End of an era at Newton Heath train depot as rail worker retires after 45 years’ service

Graham Hamlett, who lives in Moston, has worked at Newton Heath TrainCare Centre in the city since 1980.

He has now retired from his final role as a vehicle builder with the train operator Northern.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern in the North West, said: “Graham consistently demonstrated commitment to excellence and a genuine passion for his trade.

“His contribution, not just to Northern but to the operators that came before us as well, has been instrumental in keeping the region’s trains on the move.”

Graham’s colleague, Brandon West, added: “Beyond his professional achievements, Graham has also been a cherished colleague and a true friend to so many of us at Newton Heath.

“We’re going to miss his dedication, expertise and camaraderie – but his legacy at the depot will continue for years to come.”

In November, the team at Newton Heath TrainCare Centre was recognised at the Golden Spanner Awards for maintaining the most reliable Class 150 fleet.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
