Northern supports displaced Bolton University students following blaze

Students were evacuated from The Cube in Bolton when a fire broke out on Friday 15 November. At its height, around 200 firefighters from 40 fire engines were tackling the blaze, which affected every floor. Many of the students lost precious possessions and have been displaced.

Some of those affected have been referred to accommodation in Preston, requiring a daily commute to and from Bolton until June 2020.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern said: “Many of these students had to leave with very little and were unable to return to their accommodation in Bolton.

“I hope these travel passes help students to continue with their important studies, without having to worry about incurring additional travel costs – they have already been through so much, it’s the least we could do.”

Professor George Holmes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bolton added: “Everyone at the university has been humbled by the amazing and generous response from the community.

“Thank you to individuals and organisations, such as Northern that have contributed, however big or small. These travel passes will go a little bit of the way to helping some of the students most affected.”
