Northern travel advice for Meadowhall Christmas Live

Train operator Northern has informed customers planning to attend the Meadowhall Christmas Live event on Wednesday 8 November that they need to make alternative travel arrangements for their journey home. This is due to RMT strike action, which means last trains will depart Sheffield Meadowhall station well ahead of the event’s 8pm finish.

Next Wednesday – November – Northern will operate a reduced service between 7.00am and 7:00pm.   Trains are expected to be extremely busy in the Sheffield area with Northern advising customers to re-check services before travelling. Northern’s last train from Meadowhall towards Sheffield departs at 18.54 and towards Leeds at 17.56.

Paul Barnfield, Northern’s Regional Director said: “On Wednesday 8 November we are operating a reduced service in many areas. This means that the last train leaving Meadowhall is at 18.54. We urge customers wanting to attend this year’s Christmas Live event by train, to plan ahead and make alternative travel arrangements for their journey home.

“We are, of course, sorry for any inconvenience this will cause to people attending one of Sheffield’s most popular annual events. We are trying to keep everyone updated and on the move as much as possible.”

Details of Northern’s revised timetables during RMT’s strike action can be found on Northern’s industrial action page which is available through northernrailway.co.uk/strike. This also includes information on rail replacement bus services that will be operating in certain areas.

RMT’s planned strike action comes as Northern is investing to modernise the customer travel experience. By 2020 there will be 98 new trains, 243 updated trains, faster and more frequent services, more space for customers, and better stations. By the end of this year over 100 stations will be upgraded and over 30 updated trains are already operating on the network.

Customers who travel on 8 November and experience delays of 30 minutes or more, can claim compensation through Northern’s Delay Repay scheme. Those with season tickets that don’t include buses, trams or ferries, who decide not to travel due to strike action, can also claim compensation. All claims can be made using Northern’s Delay Repay process on Northern’s website or by collecting a form at any staffed station.
