Irlam Train Station facilities

The original station, which opened in 1873, lay in the path of Manchester Ship Canal’s construction site, which resulted in the station being resited, prior to the Canal opening in 1894. Raising the station and tracks, and moving them parallel to the original site, allowed both services to exist successfully together.

Seeing more than a quarter of a million passengers every year, the station serves Irlam, a commuter town within the Manchester area. Once famous for its steel production, and the subsequent transportation of the goods, the station building fell into a state of dereliction, remaining that way for over 25 years. Finally, it was renovated in 2015, and a popular railway style cafe designed in its place.

If you are visiting the region, there are a wide range of money-saving special offers from Northern, including Advance tickets, and the popular Senior Railcard.
