Playing an important role in the textile industry in and around Manchester, Stockport possessed the UK’s first water-powered silk mill, opening in 1732 and increasing the output of this popular luxury textile. With rail arriving in the region in the 1840s, bringing workers in and carrying goods around the country, the town enjoyed increased prosperity.

Stockport’s architecture reflected this affluence, with many of the town’s original buildings turned into tourist attractions. The station has a much-admired modern appearance, with a wide welcoming glass frontage that’s perfectly juxtaposed with the dramatic Stockport viaduct. Constructed in 1840, this vast brick structure, consisting of a full 22 spans, carries the trains across the River Mersey Valley and is a Grade II listed structure.
