      Northern’s train timetables will change on Sunday 18 May 2025.

      There will be changes to the timing of trains, as well as a handful of services added to routes on the Northern network.  

      This change is in line with the national timetable change. We advise customers to check before travelling as their usual services, and onward connections may differ from the current timetable.

      Summary of change 

      Services will broadly stay at the same level, with some retimings or additional trains added to highlighted routes. 

      • The timetable will see capacity increases on key lines (Blackpool-Manchester, Leeds-Doncaster and Wigan - Bolton)
      • The Northumberland line continues to open with stations at Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, and Northumberland Park opening during 2025.
      • Services will also be changed to accommodate the TransPennine Route Upgrade engineering works around Huddersfield/Leeds/York.

      What's changing from May 2025?

      Here are some details of the May 2025 timetable broken down by region. 

      323 trains added to the network

      Following the arrival of additional class 323s, we are planning to deploy extra trains (and other types) around the network 

      • In Yorkshire, Leeds – Doncaster services are planned to be operated by 4 car class 333s, and we're planning to introduce 6 car class 331 operation on some services, focused on improving capacity on Leeds – Skipton and Leeds 

      Huddersfield TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) engineering -

      • Major engineering will take place at Huddersfield in connection with TRU from 30 August 

      This means that from 30 August, the Leeds – Huddersfield stopping service (currently operated jointly by Northern and TPE) and Bradford – Huddersfield service will be replaced by an hourly Northern service between Leeds and Bradford via Dewsbury, Brighouse and Halifax.

       

      Leeds – Selby/York TRU engineering 

      • Alterations to accommodate extended overnight TRU engineering (Monday to Thursday nights) will continue during this timetable.

       

      Additional service Bradford - Ilkley & Harrogate line

      • Additional 1416 Monday to Saturday Bradford Forster Square – Ilkley (and 1451 Ilkley - Bradford Forster Square) services will be introduced.
      • Additional 0855 Sunday Harrogate – Leeds service

       

      Extended Bridlington service 

      • 0703 Beverley – Sheffield service will be extended to start from Bridlington (at 0628 Mondays to Saturday), providing an earlier morning service from Bridlington.

      323 trains added and 331 trains redeployed

      • Blackpool – Manchester Airport services will be covered by 6 car class 323s, in place of 331s, with subsequent changes to the deployment of 3 and 4 car 331s.

       

      Wigan Bolton Electrification 

      • With the completion of electrification of the route between Wigan and Lostock Junction, Southport – Manchester Oxford Road/Stalybridge via Bolton services are planned to call additionally at Ince.

      • Late-night services will resume between Manchester and Wigan via Bolton and via Atherton now that the electrification work has been completed. Monday to Thursday evening services are reinstated.

      Northumberland line 

      The openings of remaining stations on the Northumberland line will continue. 

      • New stations opening in Bedlington, Blyth Bebside and Northumberland Park remain under construction; they are due to open this year. Station calling points will be added to the timetable when available.
