Irlam and Daisy Hill improvements
Irlam and Daisy Hill stations set for accessibility improvement works in 2024
The improvements, to commence in spring 2024, are part of a collaborative effort between Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Northern, and Network Rail, with funding provided by the Department for Transport’s Access for All Scheme.
Daisy Hill
At Daisy Hill station, a comprehensive £4 million investment will usher in significant upgrades. A pivotal addition will be the installation of a passenger lift, facilitating step-free access to and from the platform. Additionally, enhancements to the station’s accessible car parking facilities will further enhance convenience for passengers with mobility needs. Works at Daisy Hill Station are scheduled to commence in mid-March 2024, with completion expected by December 2024.
While these works will deliver important benefits and step-free access at the station, there will be some disruption for passengers during the construction phase, which will include:
- Both car parks will be affected during the works. The gravelled car park to the south west will be closed throughout duration of the scheme, while the car park to the north will be used for approximately eight weeks.
- To install the lift, there will be a change to the ticket office and booking hall at the entrance of the station to create a new lift lobby area. During this phase of internal works, the ticket office will be closed with an alternative option for provision for tickets to be confirmed. Passengers will still be able to purchase tickets from alternative ticket offices, online or via the Northern app.
Irlam
A substantial investment of £5.7 million will be allocated to Irlam station, focusing on improving accessibility for all passengers. This investment will see the installation of two new passenger lifts, ensuring step-free access to and from the platforms. Works at Irlam station are anticipated to begin in early March 2024, with completion slated for the end of January 2025.
These upgrades signify a commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible public transportation network in Greater Manchester. By providing step-free access and enhancing facilities, we aim to make rail travel easier and more convenient for all members of our community.
While these works will deliver important benefits and step-free access at the station, there will be some disruption for passengers during the construction phase, which will include:
- Some areas of the station car park will be used as a compound for site welfare facilities equipment, and vehicles for the duration of the on-site works which will reduce some available parking for a temporary period.
- Two new passenger lifts will be installed in the subway underpass between platforms one and two. While the station will remain open it is anticipated the underpass may be out of use for a certain period during construction, however access to rail services will be maintained at all times.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work towards a more accessible future for all rail passengers in Greater Manchester.
