Retford Train Station facilities

First opened in 1849, Retford Station serves the picturesque Nottinghamshire market town of Retford. With the Chesterfield Canal and the wonderfully named River Idle running nearby, the town is much admired by American author Bill Bryson, who described it as charming and delightful, while Monty Python mainstay, Michael Palin, frequently talks about his visits to Retford as a child to trainspot. With famous locomotives, such as the Flying Scotsman, using the tracks, the East Coast Main Line and the Sheffield to Lincoln Line remain very busy today.

This Grade II listed building has an impressive history, with The Retford Times in 1913, publishing the memoirs of a local man who recalled that "the Duke and Duchess of Portland, Duke and Duchess of Newcastle, Earl and Countess Manvers, Earl and Countess of Yarborough, the Earl and Countess of Galway, the Foljambes, Laycocks, Denisons, Huntsmans etc” would all use Retford Station. He especially remembered the tall, graceful Russian Wolfhounds owned by the Duchess of Newcastle, stepping lightly from the carriage, accompanying their mistress.
